When your pet
undergoes routine surgery, they will usually spend a night at the hospital
where they can be monitored. When you come to pick them up, a technician
will give you the following post operative instructions:
-
Make sure to
examine the incision at least twice a day. Look for swelling, bleeding
or other discharge from the surgery site. If you notice any of those
things, contact us as soon as possible.
-
Remember to
return in 7-10 days for suture removal if required. No appointment is
necessary unless there are problems or questions.
*Note: Feline neuters do not have sutures and
therefore do not need to come in for suture removal.
-
When your pet is discharged,
pain medication may be administered. Be sure to follow the directions
carefully and call with any concerns about the dosage.
-
Any
antibiotics prescribed are to decrease the potential for infection and
are important for the healthy of your pet. Be sure to give them as
directed.
-
Restrict
your pets activity level as best that you can. Overactive pets may need
to be confined in a small space until their surgery site is healed
(usually about 7-10 days at the suture removal).
Some pain is
normal after surgery although most pets do not show any difference in their
attitude. Any signs of extreme pain however should be reported. Abnormal
signs would be biting or extreme aggression, refusal to walk or stand,
vomiting/diarrhea and refusal to eat or drink.
